10th Annual Meeting

August 8, 2007

by Sasha L. Cruz

The South Texas Chapter of your American Red Cross held its 10th Annual meeting on Wednesday August 8th at the Best Western in Weslaco. The evening kicked off with social hour where volunteers and staff got a chance to talk about their volunteer experiences throughout the past year. The evening continued with the introduction of the staff, where we welcomed a new member, Mrs. Nora Ruiz, Director of Health & Safety. This was followed by the approval of the minutes from last year, and a review of the financials. Craig Verley, board chair, then introduced our guest speaker for this years meeting, Mr. George Garrett.

Mr George Garrett is the Emergency Manager for the Cities of Weslaco and Donna. He began by saying how important it is for people to volunteer, and how much he appreciated the support the South Texas Chapter provided to all the emergency responders throughout the Rio Grande Valley. He also mentioned that the Valley is moving toward a coordinated response with all the agencies and emergency personnel working together, and that the South Texas Chapter is an important player in that coordination. Mr. Garrett was presented with a beautiful gift basket put together by one of our chapter volunteers Mrs. Elma Barrientos, in appreciation of him taking the time to speak to our group.

The evening ended with special recognitions to the following outstanding volunteers:

Richard Breckon

Dave Cota

Tami Dittburner, N.P.

Sister Ramona Meurer

Lynne Pare

Warren Quick

Mary Ann Resendez

Andrew Riley

Arturo Tijerina

David Underwood

This years Enrique Duarte Volunteer of the Year Award went to Mr. David Vera of Starr County. A special thanks goes out to him for his continued support to the South Texas Chapter as well as to the mission of the American Red Cross to provide relief to victims of disaster and helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
